The Firefighter’s Dilemma

When you lead a nonprofit or a church, every day feels like an endless series of fires to put out. Staffing needs, urgent community requests, budget tightropes—it’s easy to get trapped in the day-to-day grind just trying to keep the doors open. Over time, that constant triage drains your energy, leaving you feeling like you’re carrying the entire mission alone on your shoulders.

I know that feeling because I’ve lived it.

The Turning Point

When I became Executive Director of the Beltrami Humane Society (now Great River Rescue) in Bemidji, Minnesota, the organization was at a breaking point. Poor management and a lack of leadership had pushed the Board to the brink of closing our doors permanently.

Having recently completed a course on strategic planning at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs, I realized what was missing: we had no unified direction. I decided to lead our team through a structured strategic planning process.

It changed everything.

The plan gave us clear strategic direction and actionable initiatives tied directly to our vision. Instead of just reacting to daily emergencies, we handled the day-to-day while actively moving toward our long-term goals. Within two years, we achieved tremendous momentum, turning a failing shelter into a thriving, resilient organization.

The Realization

Over my eleven years leading Great River Rescue—and later as ED of Kinship of the Park Rapids Area—I realized two critical truths:

1. Every mission-driven organization needs a structure to stay focused on what truly matters.

2. Facilitating these transformations and building these roadmaps was where my true passion and competence lay.

In 2020, driven by a desire to align my work with my deepest strengths and build a stronger foundation for my family, I launched Mustful Strategic Consulting.
