The Long Trail Ahead

This article is Part Four of a four-part series titled The Northwoods Way: Cultivating Lifelong Leadership in Northern Minnesota. In this collection, we explore how the unique culture, geography, and interconnectedness of the North shape what it means to lead with integrity and impact.

The Foundation: Leadership as Service

At the heart of effective leadership lies a timeless principle: the Golden Rule. To lead others effectively, you must first love them as you love yourself. In the context of leadership—especially within nonprofits or faith-based organizations—this isn't just a sentiment; it is a prerequisite.

If you do not genuinely care for those you lead, you shouldn’t attempt to hold the position. At its core, your mission is the service of others. Without an authentic foundation of love and respect, your team will see through the performance, and your leadership will lack the trust necessary to weather difficult seasons.

Beyond Management: Empowering Your Team

It follows, then, that this care must extend beyond your clients to the very people standing beside you: your team. True leadership isn't about maintaining control; it’s about providing the tools, authority, and confidence your staff needs to step up.

To foster a resilient team, you must:

  • Encourage Action: Give them the space to use their unique skills and abilities.

  • Allow for Failure: You need to let them try—and sometimes fail—while maintaining guardrails so they feel protected.

  • Demonstrate Belief: It isn't enough to say you care; you must show it by trusting their judgment. When you demonstrate that you believe in them, they begin to believe in themselves.

The Reality of the Long Haul

Finally, it is vital to remember that leadership isn't a trophy or an award for your organization’s accomplishments. It isn't about personal accolades or simply building a resume. Leadership is a long haul.

It means guiding your organization through every storm, year after year. It requires making the right decisions for the collective good, even—and especially—when those decisions are unpopular. Few see the sacrifices made behind the scenes to keep things moving forward.

Leadership is a high calling, and it isn’t for everyone. It requires a level of honesty with yourself: Are you truly ready to make the sacrifices necessary to serve others day in and day out? If the answer is yes, then you must be prepared to take the wheel with humility and persistence.
