The Most Powerful Words in Leadership

We are in need of strong, authentic leaders now more than ever. The pace of change is dizzying, and the complexity of the challenges we face can feel overwhelming. The truth is, none of us — not even the experts — have all the answers. So how do we move our organizations forward amid so much uncertainty?

While there are no easy solutions, leaders can still light the way by uniting people around a shared vision. They don’t have to have all the answers. In fact, the most powerful thing a leader can say is, “I don’t know.”

With today’s complex challenges, any leader who claims to have all the answers is fooling themselves and others. The real path forward comes from bringing together a diverse group of people — each with unique skills, perspectives, and experiences — to pursue a common goal.

I love how Tod Bolsinger describes leadership in his book Canoeing the Mountains:

“Energizing a community of people toward their own transformation in order to accomplish a shared mission in the face of a changing world.”

As we develop our plans, we also must remain adaptive. Rarely do things go exactly as expected. The future is uncertain, and new obstacles arise all the time. A good leader guides the team forward with confidence and flexibility, helping everyone adjust course when necessary while staying focused on the bigger vision of success.

Leaders also need to recognize that progress comes with loss. People you’ve relied on may move on. Programs that once produced results may no longer serve your mission. Funders who once believed in your work may not support your new direction. This will be painful — but if you stay the course with an energized and committed team, your organization will emerge stronger and more resilient.

One resource I’ve found particularly helpful is The Leadership Challenge by Barry Posner and James Kouzes. Through decades of research, they’ve identified five practices of exemplary leadership:

  1. Model the Way

  2. Inspire a Shared Vision

  3. Challenge the Process

  4. Enable Others to Act

  5. Encourage the Heart

These practices form a solid foundation for any leader who wants to grow, inspire, and make lasting impact.
